Nigeria

Project Description

Nigeria

The WHO ranked Nigeria in the top 5 countries with the highest TB burden in the world. It’s even the highest in all of Africa. In 2016, more than 100.000 TB cases were notified. It is estimated that only one out of every three TB patients is found and registered. The travel distance to a health facility makes it hard for people to access the healthcare they need. A mobile TB clinic was exactly the essential solution Nigeria needed to make a change.

The Delft Approach

With our collaboration with Challenge TB and KNCV we strive for more TB awareness, case notification and proper treatment for people with presumed TB. In September 2017, our first mobile OneStopTB clinic arrived in the Nasarawa State. Immediately after launch, the truck hit the road and visited communities to screen people on tuberculosis. The second mobile OneStopTB clinic arrived in the Ogun State in November 2017. The so called “Wellness On Wheels” trucks are equipped with our Easy DR X-ray systems, CAD4TB box & cloud and the GeneXpert laboratory. The clinic offers free TB testing services and takes the TB testing equipment directly to communities. Patients can now receive the proper diagnosis and infected people can receive treatment the same day.

Making an Impact

The trucks are on the move and actively raising TB awareness and testing people on TB. According to Challenge TB, after the first three months on the road, 52 people were diagnosed with TB and are now receiving the treatment they need. Our clinics will continue to screen communities on TB and free Nigeria of tuberculosis.
